Help Out On Halloween

Photo via Flickr Halloween in college is nearly unrecognizable from the favorite October holiday of our youth. Most people head out hoping there will be people to open their doors for a party rather than to offer Kit Kats, and costumes become party attire for getting ‘likes’ more so than candy. What was once a night simultaneously fueled by and dedicated to children’s happiness tends to become the back-drop theme of another weekend’s parties. Even though us twenty-somethings may not be able to (successfully) trick-or-treat anymore, you can still keep the tradition of generosity towards children alive this October 31st at the Halloween Fundraiser Costume Ball to benefit Horizons for Homeless Children.

Beginning at 9pm, costumed revelers can head to Crossroads Irish Pub to party for a purpose. The private event will be held on the top floor of the bar and includes free appetizers and a cash bar, as well as music, dancing, and costume contests. The cost of admission is $20, but it is more of a donation than a cover charge. All proceeds from ticket sales go to Horizons for Homeless Children, an organization devoted to improving the lives of homeless children in the Boston area. This year, bring back the spirit of Halloween as the ultimate night for children- without passing up a party or passing out candy.

Horizons for Homeless Children works with 2,000 kids in Massachusetts and has locations as close as Roxbury and Jamaica Plain. The organization focuses on giving homeless children the developmental foundation they need but may not otherwise have access to. Donations from the fundraiser support three early education centers as well as Playspaces, which provide a safe environment for the children to access books, toys, and art supplies appropriate to their age group. These programs are invaluable to the children they benefit, which is truly something to celebrate.
