OUR VALUES

Your Magazine, Emerson College’s monthly lifestyle publication, operates under these collaboratively written value statements. The organization’s Values Set is based upon three pillars: Professionalism, Community, and Inclusion. All contributing staff members, executive board members, and Your Magazine collaborators are expected to align with these values, both within their work at the magazine and throughout their time spent at Emerson College, should they wish to remain a part of the Your Magazine production team in any capacity.

Any complaint or report from a member concerning treatment by or actions of another member of the organization to organizational leadership should be addressed. Organization leadership will contact the Student Engagement and Leadership office for further assistance in following action steps in order to ensure the safety, well-being, and fair treatment of all individuals affected. Any investigations into students violating community standards will be enacted by the Community Standards office and/or the Title IX office. Organizational leadership cannot remove members for violations of community standards and are not responsible for investigating these issues if they are to arise. If an executive board member has a history of shirking their position responsibilities as dictated by our Constitution, leadership reserves the right to have a meeting with the member regarding their responsibilities and commitment to the magazine.

Organization leadership will not be informed of violations of Community Standards or Title IX as per student privacy regulations. Students will be removed through sanction only. Individuals always have the right to request Supportive Measures through Access, Equity, & Title IX or through the Healing & Advocacy Collective without going through the Formal Resolution Process. Emerson College’s Supportive Measures are available to all community members and can be accessed here.

the three pillars

professionalism

Your Magazine’s Executive Board commits to maintaining a high standard of professionalism by exercising journalistic integrity — from correctly citing sources and fact-checking for accuracy, to aligning with the magazine’s mission statement and ethics — and abiding by the magazine’s set design, writing, editing, and publishing guidelines.  Individuals will hold themselves and others accountable, make time for collaborative reflection when necessary, and maintain honest, respectful lines of communication throughout the set production schedule. Members of the executive board will keep private magazine operations confidential within the approved parties, i.e. no information regarding chosen pitches leaves the pitch meeting until editors have sent out emails to their writers.

community

Your Magazine commits to maintaining a community culture that fosters collaboration and self-expression.  All staff members shall uphold this commitment by having empathy for one another and respecting each other’s beliefs, opinions, and lived experiences.  If a staff member feels their safety or comfort is threatened, they should communicate their concerns with a member of the executive board, i.e. the Diversity Chair, Managing Editor, or Editor-in-Chief. Emerson community members are encouraged to share any concerns with the College through the share a concern portal or bias incident report portal, both linked respectively.  All organization members and contributors should be made aware that concerns can be shared anonymously through both aforementioned portals.

Inclusion

Your Magazine members and contributors recognize the importance of diversity in journalism, creative fields, and publications, and strive to give opportunities to underrepresented groups.  An environment that cultivates acceptance and the sharing of ideas without fear of judgment and celebrates individuality will be maintained at all times.  No person involved in the production of Your Magazine will discriminate or permit discrimination by another member of the community on the basis of race, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, physical ability, age, marital status, or citizenship in any manner.  Harassment based on any of these characteristics, whether verbal, physical, or visual, is a form of discrimination, and may include any behavior that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment for any group or individual.
