How to Get the Kylie Look
Lips Kylie Jenner, despite being at times problematic (cultural appropriation, posing in a wheelchair, etc.), reigns as one of the most influential celebrities of the millennial generation, largely due to her social media exposure. Her makeup look, in particular, has enthralled teens and twentysomethings alike. Her fuller lips seem to have inspired the nation, with some even going so far as to take on the Kylie Jenner lip challenge, using suction from a glass to get fuller lips and often hurting themselves in the process. Her lip kits sold out in mere minutes and left many questioning whether stock was withheld as part of a PR ploy. PR stunt or not, there's no denying the lip kits are a hit. Their release comes at a time when many already seek to capture that matte mauve/brown lip made famous, at least in part, by Kylie Jenner.
At $29 (plus shipping) the lip kits contain a lip liner and a liquid lipstick. Price wise, they’re comparable to Kat Von D liquid lipsticks and Anastasia Beverly Hills liquid lipsticks, both priced at $20 (for just the lipstick). The lip kit’s consistency has been criticized for its drying nature, however, any frequent liquid lipstick wearer knows this is a normal effect of a matte lip. The formula most closely resembles that of the Anastasia Beverly Hills lipsticks. The lip kit’s original three colors, shades ranging from mauve to dark brown: Candy K, Dolce K, and True Brown, have been widely regarded as dupes for Colourpop’s liquid lippies in the shades Beeper, Limbo, and Clueless. While swatching shows they aren’t exact matches, the $6 price tag is a budget-friendly option for those looking for the Kylie look. The Colourpop lippies are exclusively available on their website Colourpop.con. Although affordable, the Colourpop consistency is extremely hard to wear for those not used to liquid lipstick.
Instead another budget friendly, and lip friendly option are the NYX new liquid suedes. These liquid lipsticks are priced at $6.99 and fairly easy to wear. Though there are no exact color matches, Sandstorm is a nice light brown that slightly resembles Dolce K and could work for trying to get the Kylie look.
Eyes
Kylie’s beauty influence is unique from many other celebrities as she completes many of her makeup looks herself. Her app provides tips and tutorials and encourages fans to replicate her looks. Many of her looks feature brown smoky eyes, easily achievable with any matte brown eyeshadow palette such as Kat Von D’s Shade and Light Eye Palette. Kylie doesn’t wear much eyeliner, opting for thick and lengthy false eyelashes to make her eyes pop. One affordable false eyelash option is drugstore brand Ardell’s. But although Kylie wears falsies, they are not essential for the look. A good mascara such as Maybelline Falsies will thicken and lengthen lashes without the hassle of putting on falsies.
Kylie fills in her brows lightly for everyday looks and saves darker fuller brows for more glam looks. A brow pencil with a spooly on one end, such as the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz is an essential brow tool. The spooly should be used to brush the brow hair before filling in and brush product through the brows.
Face
Almost all of Kylie’s looks feature flawless foundation. To achieve that flawless foundation look with medium to full coverage, some drugstore foundation options are the Maybelline Fit Me in the matte formula or the L’oreal Infallible Matte Foundation. The more expensive (but worthwhile) Make Up Forever HD foundation is also a perfect option. A good concealer should also be used particularly in the undereye area to brighten. Maybelline’s Instant Age Rewind is a good drugstore option, but Mac Prolong is worth the splurge.
Kylie and the rest of the Kardashian/Jenner clan (or klan) are known for their intense contour and highlight looks. To achieve this a good beginner contour kit is the Anastasia Beverly Hills contour kit, however, NYX also makes a more affordable one that's worth a try. For highlight, Jaclyn Hill x Becca Cosmetics’ Champagne Pop is a standout and has been praised by Kylie’s sister, Khloe Kardashian. However, Colourpop’s Lunch Money is a budget-friendly option.
Kylie has been rumored to be creating an entire line of cosmetics in edition to the lip kits. The name of the Instagram account for the lip kits was even changed to @kyliecosmetics—likely a sign that something is in the works.
