After living through the Y2K era and watching those who aren’t comfortable with the extremely feminine-presenting trend struggle, the subversive basics trend is a refreshing wave.

Originality and fashion are intrinsically connected in one way or another, so making your own pieces further delves into that individuality.

It has everything to do with who popularized the trend being that country singers have always worn western inspired clothing, but have not made a dent in the fashion world any time recently.

“The entire point of having sets at all is that you get more than one person in the cast together in one place, it’s just a space where people can logically get together,” says McKenzie. “A diner serves that purpose, to have a spot that is consistent and regular.”

About every three months, I go through my clothing to decide what I want to donate and what I want to keep. The last time I did this, I noticed something interesting. The ‘keep’ pile always has around three items that don’t fit me, but that I never throw away. And I finally realized why. It’s because of the stories and memories that these clothing items hold.

This nostalgic feeling is one we all experience through food because it reminds us of people, places, and times in our lives. Food nostalgia is directly connected to the fact that food is social; the sensory experience that comes with eating brings us back to memories that are vivid and emotional.

Living in a place that people don’t tend to spend too long in makes everything feel slightly temporary. This modifies how young people, in particular, interact with their space. At times it can feel like your hometown is betraying you by catering only to these temporary people while you have been there all along.

There is no question on whether this overlap of dance and fashion exists; it is evident that the two have interacted for years. The question to tackle now: is this a beneficial intersection?
