Can A.I. Be My Personal Stylist?: Diving into my Instagram Fashion Ads

by Leo Lukaszevicz

As AI integrates into every aspect of our lives, can it now curate my wardrobe? This week, I delved into Instagram fashion ads tailored to my feed to evaluate whether they align with my tastes or miss the mark entirely. Let’s scroll through the ads that flooded my Instagram feed this week:

#1. rhinestone

mini bag

Starting off, I got the Alexander McQueen “Jewelled Hobo Mini Bag.” Although the black crystal detailing pulls me in, the Swarovski-covered knuckle rings make me question the appeal. With a grand total of $4,490, I will have to say I am not the exact target market for this bag and, unfortunately, will have to pass.

#2. black & green loafers

Next up, I got an ad from the infamous Temu and their “Stylish Square Toe Smart Casual Shoes.” I do have a love for black dress shoes and loafers; however, the green sole and the square shape just give off Minecraft, and for that reason, I am out.

#3. rainbow-design jeans

Following up were these “Coach X Observed By Us 90's Fit Denim Jeans” with star and moon designs. These are cute, but cute in a way that I could see them being sold at Claire's in 2014, or worse, Temu. They are fun, but my style is very minimalist and neutral tone-oriented. I’m sorry Coach, but count me out.

#4. rose gold necklace

Next on the list was an ad from Burberry, showcasing their “Gold-Plated Rose Necklace.” Although I’d prefer Burberry over Temu – and even Coach – the style of the charms is too big for me, and $1,790 is still out of my price range. If you think I’m being too picky for artificial intelligence, I remind you that it somehow knows I love fashion and only shows me fashion ads. I’m sure if I start liking the ones I prefer, the AI will start to learn I only wear silver jewelry.

#5. silver link bracelet

And I might have spoken too soon… for clarification, I got an ad for the Tiffany and Co. “HardWear Large Link Bracelet” in sterling silver. Now this one is scary because I’ve been thinking a lot about Tiffany’s lately. I’ve been looking to expand my ring collection, and who else comes to mind besides the iconic Tiffany? Again, silver is my metal of choice, but I do not wear bracelets — these “large links” are way too large for my liking; however,I have to give it to Instagram, they were close with this one, but not close enough.

#6. pink sequin jumpsuit

Last but not least, we have this “Rock Your World Sequin Jumpsuit” from Akira. Although definitely an interesting concept, it's a no right off the bat. I had never heard of this brand prior, but it seems to be another fast fashion, female-oriented, retailer. Though they do have some creative pieces on their website, Akira is definitely not on target for me or anywhere near my style.

All that to say, I don't think my Instagram algorithm has gotten to know my style well enough to be my personal stylist. That being said, I think AI is gaining traction fast, especially with a lot of tech innovations on the rise.

Until next Monday,

Leo
