Pop! Fizzle! Face Mask?

Girls’ nights typically consist of romantic comedies, magazines, greasy pizza, and fun bottles of vino or bubbly (if you’ve reached the lucky age of 21). Throw in a few massages and mani-pedis and you have the perfect setup for a night of full relaxation. But what do you do with that leftover wine or Champagne from your last night in, especially when there’s not enough to enjoy as a full glass? Make a popping self-care face mask!

Wine and Champagne often get a bad rep for lowering inhibitions and producing negative health effects when consumed in large amounts. However, scientists have recently discovered multiple skin benefits in each beverage in terms of anti-aging. One dermatologist, Dr. Marina Peredo, supports the use of wine and Champagne in skin care products because of short-term and long-term results that are seen on the skin. So what is it about these beverages that helps our skin maintain that fresh and young appearance?

The ingredient that has scientists excitedly jumping is antioxidants. These substances help remove any pollutants—air pollution, sun damage, dirt, oil—from infiltrating the skin and causing irreversible damage. To put this in skin care terms: antioxidants are often included in the vitamin C and E products that you may or may not use. It clears out the dirt and bacteria congesting your pores and helps clear that fine layer of dead cells from the skin’s surface.

Your body starts aging automatically, but it is not until later that physical signs start showing up. Over time, skin loses its elasticity and collagen production slows down. This breakdown leads to those first signs of fine lines and wrinkles because the skin no longer has the ability to remain tight forming. To combat this, nutritionist Anshul Jaibjarat recommends consuming more things with antioxidants as these substances help promote these functions. So eat that handful of blueberries while making your Champagne mask to get that extra boost of elasticity.

One specific antioxidant, known as resveratrol, definitely makes its mark on the skin. The Journal of Lifestyle Medicine actually published an article in 2014 that explained the effects it has on human skin. Found in red grape skin and red wine, resveratrol helps combat the damage of free radicals and reduces inflammation. So it can help you to wake up without puffiness around your eyes and also works to reduce fine lines across the forehead.

While red wine has resveratrol, Champagne has acid. The bubbling of the carbon dioxide helps exfoliate the skin, effectively taking away the first few layers of dead skin cells. The skin creates new cells every few days, but it is still important to exfoliate as dead skin cells tend to pile up on each other. On top of that, the acid in Champagne can help to brighten your complexion, allowing your skin to retain a youthful glow. “The tartaric acid in Champagne actually helps even out the skin tone,” nurse practitioner and Botox™ administrator Nancy Pellegrino states. “One of the main reasons skin looks old is because the discoloration lessens the natural brightness. That tartaric acid brings it out.”

CHAMPAGNE MASK

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup of Champagne

  • 4 ounces of powdered clay

  • 2 tablespoons of heavy cream, half and half, or low fat plain yogurt

Directions

1.     Grab a mixing bowl and pour in the powdered clay.

2.     Slowly mix the dairy product into the clay to make a smooth and thick texture.

3.     Continue mixing as you pour in the Champagne.

4.     Make sure your face is clean before applying the mask.

5.     Once on, make yourself busy with a magazine for 20 minutes as the mask works its magic!

RED WINE MASK

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of any red wine

  • 1 tablespoon Greek yogurt

  • 1 tablespoon honey

Directions

1.     Grab a mixing bowl and pour 1 tablespoon of each ingredient into it.

2.     Add has many tablespoons as you want. Depends on how many masks you want to make. Don’t worry about the mask looking too thin, it’s supposed to be that way.

3.     Paint your nails or dive into your Netflix sesh for 15–20 minutes while you wait, and then wash the mask off!
